戦後のベストセラーのひとつ「流れる星は生きている」は藤原てい女史の作品。元祖品格教授の御母堂である。ご主人の新田次郎氏が満州の気象台員の時に終戦になり、捕虜になったため、夫人と長男、次男の正彦氏、生まれたばかりの娘の４人は、日本へのすさまじい帰国への彷徨に近い旅がはじまる。朝鮮半島の半ばで飢えと渇きに苦しんだ一行に見かねた現地の農婦がみずみずしい瓜をそっとさしだした。まさに無償の行為である。彼女のやさしい心は、女史にとって精神的にも大きな支えになったに違いない。彼女の行為がなければ、「若き数学者のアメリカ」などの佳編も読めなかったかもしれない。
